  • Lawrence North defeats Glenbrook North

Lawrence North defeated the top team in Illinois (you know, that state where they "play a better brand of basketball than their neighbors to the east" ), Glenbrook North, 79-61 Saturday night.

    Wildcats pounce on Illinois' best

When Bruce Weber sat behind me at a high school game in December, I heard him say that no one in Illinois could beat Glenbrook North (which is coached by his brother David). That didn't turn out to be literally true, since they did lose one game previously (to Proviso West, IIRC), but it shows that Bruce considered them to be the top team in Illinois. He did say, "Lawrence North might be able to beat them." Indeed.

Sounds like Conley had a career game Saturday night. I think the article probably gives LN too much credit for their defense on Scheyer; after all, he did get one more point than his average. Still, it's a team game, and LN came up with a solid win on the road against one of the best teams in the country.

LN defeated Proviso East and Glenbrook North, and North Central defeated Simeon Career Academy. I'm not aware of any Illinois team that has defeated a top Indiana team this season. Better brand of basketball? Not this year.

Scheyer is a very talented kid and a @amn good shooter. He has always wanted to play for Duke and should do do very well replacing JJ Redick. The only reason he thought a bit longer about Illinois (before committing to Duke) was because of the Weber connection and how well the Illini did last year. Obviously, it's a blow to the Illini to lose one of the top recruits in their home state. He (and his family) didn't want to leave the impression that the Illini weren't seriously under consideration.

About the game....GBN didn't stand a chance against Oden and Lawrence North. I don't think anyone around here thought they did. Like everyone else, they didn't have an answer to Oden.

I'm not sure there is another high school that could beat Lawrence North at this stage. Oden is just too dominant for the high school game. IMO, it doesn't have anything to do with who plays the better "brand" of basketball.

I'm no expert on the subject but....
Illini have historically had a hard time recruiting in the Chicago area, some of it having to do with real or perceived poor treatment of potential recruits and there coaches. Current coach is trying to turn that around, but it will take a lot of time. Can't really blame someone for taking a free ride at Duke IMO.
A book fell on my head, and I only have my shelf to blame.

GBN still has a great chance to repeat as state champions...the last time there will be only two classes (A & AA) in IHSA basketball. Sectional play begins Feb 28th.

If you're interested, you can listen to the games on GBN-TV/Radio via GBN's Broadcasting Dept website.

                Glenbrook North...

Isn't that the home of the Powder-Puff-Let's-Get-Drunk-And-Throw-Crap-On-Our-"Friends" celebration of a few years ago?

Must be tough only getting the Range Rover Sport instead of the full size for your 16th birthday.

                Sorry Bryant Guy.

Actually, I'm not surprised that Lawrence North won that game, or any other against an Illinois team.

I think that the "party" was at Glenbrook South (my sisters school)

                  Well after my time.

                    It was North.

The actions of a few kids almost three years ago. Unfortunately, you'll always be able to find one or two bad apples in a bunch. It shouldn't be an indictment on an entire community or school, however.

Most every young person I've met at GBN has been respectful of others, hard working and good "sports". Same goes with most of the vast majority of students at the other area high schools (New Trier, GBS, Stevenson, Loyola, Deerfield, etc).

Youth problems exist in every community...even ones relatively well off. These particularly "bright" kids showed even more stupidity by taping their idiotic/illegal activities and then hand the tape over to the media. Outside of that, it probably could have happened in most any high school system, IMO.

Never been a fan of Lawrence North and not sure how they keep getting these great big guys - Eric Montross, John Stewart (Kentucky recruit who died during state tournament game) and now Oden.

One thing I keep thinking about every time I see Duke this year is how good McRoberts, the Duke frosh, looks.

And Oden pretty much dominated him although he was younger.

Lawrence North plays at Bloomington South this Friday and then hosts Pike Feb. 21. I think Pike is No. 2 ranked in state right now and only losses are to Lawrence North and Bloomington South.

Those kids move into Lawrence Twp so they can play basketball @ Lawrence North. Same as the football players move into Warren Central's school district.

Actually, in WC's case some of 'em don't even move...they just find transportation to WC and the IHSAA won't do anything about it.

I know you're right, OWFANatic. Just having some fun. Everyone has to pick on someone else's school, you know.

Actually, it wasn't so much what the kids did that left the bad taste in my mouth (as they say, kids will be kids) but more the actions and reactions of some of the parents.
