Well, in football or other team sports I think most fans want their team to win and hate to see an over the hill player detracting from that goal. Even if they like them.

In individual sports I don't mind it. I enjoyed watching AJ race pretty much every time he took to the track even long after I knew he wasn't a threat to win.
