Checking the facts behind the hype. I hadn't heard of most of these scares, but then again I tend to stay away from a lot of that media.

Rev, I'm usually the first to agree that we have a media hype problem in this country, but I do think we have issues with meth--specifically here in the midwest. Maybe they've just stepped up their efforts to find labs because of the hype, but they seem to be finding and shutting down a lot of meth labs here in Central Indiana.

Good article, revealing the evil behind relying too much on numbers and statistics for one's opinions.

I deal with that at work every day, on a different level. On one hand, here's me and my fellow QA here telling people "don't worry about numbers, just serve your customer and they'll take care of themselves;" and there's their supervisors saying "you need to bring these numbers up; you need to bring these numbers down." Their supervisors have more of an immediate impact on their jobs than we do, so the subconscious message is "numbers are more important than quality." So some people, to make their numbers better, take shortcuts on service (and ultimately make it harder on everybody), but what do they care? Their numbers are good; "that's all that matters." I've had people tell me as much. Depressing...

I agree with that. We get arrests around here of kids trying to steal anhydrous ammonia from grain elevators, so I know it's prevelant. I think the article linked was simply exposing some flawed reporting about the stats, not dismissing the problem entirely (although I agree it can read like they are just telling us there's no problem).

I'd have thought the "25,000 deaths" that Katrina was sure to cause would be at the top of the list.

Yeah, 1147 of them in the Crazy Story thread alone. Which makes Rev-Ed's point in another unanticipated way.

I never anticipate having my point made.

How do you over hype the fact that now because of all the "meth-heads" I now have to live with chronic nasal congestion.

Because the government's answer to all of society's problems is always the same word, "legislation."
