  • OT - laser jammer?

I drive too fast and get too many tickets - I get one every year or so and they end up costing $500-1000 depending on whether I use an attorney or not. I have a Valentine One and an old Escort Solo but they don't do squat against laser. Anybody used a jammer with any success? Looking at a Blinder M20 or M40.

Just replace the 'lead foot' and you'll be fine.

Real good site if you're thinking of any radar detector or thinking of purchasing a jammer.

My question is, are these "in town" tickets or out of town. If they are in town, I can understand (well, almost). If they are "out of town," all I can say is the state troopers (or whatever you guys call them) must really have your number I never saw even one when I was there!!

I live on the south side of town and travel the same chunk of road every day. It is 4 lane for much of it, goes up to 6 lane as you get closer to the city. For no apparent reason, the speed limit is 55 although traffic flows all day at 75 and 80.........and I drive at 85 or 90, depending on weather and traffic. You can go for weeks out there and never see a cop but periodically, the cops get bored and set up a speed trap around a corner or down in the median and they can pop folks all day long. Including me. I've had 4 tickets out there in the last 3 years, beat 3 of them and got stuck with the other because I forgot about it and didn't appear. But every time it's $500+ for my attorney. I also drive down to Kenai/Homer for fun and JUST missed a ticket this year when my wife had to stop to, ummm, pick some flowers. We got back in the car and drove a mile and a half and found the cops had the guy who'd been tailing me for 50 miles at 85 pulled over.

I drive fast but I am stone sober, have a new car in perfect condition with ABS, AWD and traction control. I have tire pressure and temp monitoring, I wear my belts, I am fairly skilled and I've gone through the Bondurant school. I don't take chances but I do push down the road and I don't want any more tickets.

Then it's a mild case of the Muldowney Syndrome. As in Shirley Muldowney.

Jim, rather nice 'justification' for breaking the law. 90 mph in a 55 zone with virtually any level of traffic definitely qualifies as "taking chances".

Also, rather nice confession that you broke the law, but 'got away with it' thanks to the help of an attorney.

And, just to top it off, the thread started with a plea for information on how to commit yet another crime, obstruction, that in some jurisdictions is a felony.

You are right, I should have consulted with you first. What should I have for dinner and what time should I go to bed?

jakester, that's a little harsh don't you think?

Rather than a jammer I want one of those devices some firetrucks get that send signals to the stoplights to make them change to green in their direction. Supposedly they are or were available to Joe Citizen.

Nope, Jim seems to be very content to bring up every mention of the accusations against KK and to spear his 'ethics' at every opportunity.

                          Jim,

Cops aim laser at a reflective front surface, ie the front license plate or a headlight. Turning your headlights on cuts laser return by 50% if he aims at the headlight. Having a set of driving lights in the area of a mandatory front plate causes much the same effect. If you don't need a front plate by law like Michigan, remove it.

Jammers are junk as tested by Car and Driver and Mythbusters on Discovery Channel.

If you want to get really creative though, get a 1 million candlepower off road light, and go to a lighting shop and get infrared pass filter material to put over the lens of the light. Only IR passes through, and the illegal light is never seen as annoying to anyone, and never suspected.

C&D magazine found that darker cars are harder to pick up on laser too.

RADAR-Radio Detecting and Ranging-You can jam the radar, but the new radar guns detect a jam and showup on the radar readout as a jam. Radar also picks up the fastest vehicle in a pack, so drive a little slower than the flow.

LIDAR-Light Detecting and Ranging-No way to jam the laser beam, you must figure out a way to absorb the light. I have been told that the old car bra will absorb some of the light, but its not fool proof. Bouncing light around the front should work, but I usually hit the car on the mirror, so nothing on the bumper helps.

VASCAR-Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder-Nothing can be done, its a stop watch computer.

My guess Jim, is that you have a radar detector on the front windshield when you get stopped. That is why you are getting tickets. If I see the radar detector, its automatic ticket.
