When I was a kid ( no smart alec remarks here ) the strike zone used to be the bottom of the knees to the letters on the uniform. Now I am watching the playoffs and it dawns on me that they only call a strike when the ball is above the knees and below the belt. Is this what the strike zone is supposed to be or am I seeing things?

Your memory is sound, dog.
The rules haven't changed but the umpires quit calling strikes at belt level or above decades ago.
It makes me laugh to hear MLB doing research on how to speed the game up. Call the strike zone where its supposed to be and you'll see those bats swinging.Center Grove Trojans

As it is written, the zone is supposed to be knees to armpits. But as has been noted, umps quit calling the high strike years ago. It's hurting the game, and making it a home run derby."It was actually fun, because you're back fully driving again in these trucks. Ninety percent of the tracks we go to in the IRL, you're flat-out. I was having to lift off the corners some here." - Buddy Rice

Agree with all of you on this. The idea of a "pitcher's umpire" or a "hitter's umpire" drives me nuts. Call the doggone strike zone as defined in the rule book.
At least most umpires have quit giving Glavine and Maddux the extra wide strike zone. Bobby Cox tossed a few times due in large part to that improvement. Nothing against these two. Admire both of these future HOFers.Marv Fish
