Hey, Bubba.
One of the things I miss is a good bbq. I was just reading that although bbq sauce is a no-no there is nothing wrong with a good rub. Any suggestions?

TD, nothing personal, but--screw the Atkins Diet. It only works in the long term if you exercise your a$$ off; if you don't, it can kill you. IMHO.
The plan I've been on balances complex carbs (in my case, a lot of rice and spuds) with protein, and knocks out all sugar, salt and oils. So far I've kissed off 35 pounds and have never felt better. There's more about it at www.provida.com if you want to read. My one gripe is they overhype the "Eat More and Exercise Less" shtick (it should say "Eat More Often and Exercise Less Often"). Other than that, it's the best thing my wife ever forced me to do.It works.

Because the Atkin's diet violates so many things that we think we know about health it has not been experimentally tested. Now that the studies are starting to be done it seems that there is something to it.
If we actually knew how it worked, it might be OK for Mr. Truth Detector to have his barbecue sauce and still diet.
BTW, Mr. Skypigeon, from a diabetes standpoint, potatoes are not very complex caarbohydrates. If you look at their glycemic index, they are like eating pure sugar.Akimbo

Myself, Since I'm a Carbohydrate fiend, I prefer doing the 40-30-30 thing, so I'm doing the Balance diet(they have the best tasting supplement bars), with regular exercise I'm down 10 lbs and have lost 3% body fat measured on a Tanita scale.Delta Force Theme... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQUeQOIlcDM You're Welcome

Fact is, I've tried the Atkins diet before. Not only did I not lose a pound, my bad cholesterol level skyrocketed. I have a brother on Atkins who swears by it--and he, his words, "exercises like a demon." I walk a lot; that's my exercise.
I don't mean to get defensive about it; it's just every time someone notices my weight loss, they ask "Are you on Atkins?" And my answer is "No, Atkins would kill me." It's not for everybody..."I didn't hear a single comment about airboxes, "carbashians", or how terrible the car looked. While not on Atkins, I did switch to the low carb lifestyle a couple of years ago. It started with strict adherence to a diet called Sugarbusters, and those lessons have become habits. It's amazing how easy it is once you know where all the sugar is and simply stop consuming it. Sweet potatoes instead of regular, wheat bread instead of white, some kinds of rice are ok, others aren't, etc. Vegetable choices. There are even "buster-friendly" pastas. Chicken, fish, salad, steak, it's all good. It works, no question. I lost about 25 pounds at the beginning, and people started asking if I was ok. So I put about 10 back on, just by eating more, and am good to go. Oh, and beer is the absolute devil.
Good luck to you in whichever regimen you pursue, it's major at first, then becomes easy. You'll feel and look better, and chicks will dig you. Well, maybe.

You can then adjust the flavor to your liking, I like to spark it up a bit with a variety of dried peppers.

My wife did the adtkins thang, it worked for her. So I gave it a whirl. Here is what I did. (and what we do now) No bread, watch the sugar, no beans (made my family happy) and I watch my carbs. Then when Friday rolls around it is off the diet til Sunday night..... cheating on weekends helps lose the weight! I have lost 31 pounds in probably 2 months or so!

TD,
I was on the Atkins a year ago and was very successful but put the weight back on after I went off of it. I see the major problem is it doesn't teach you self control. It's just not healthy to keep jamming food down your pie-hole even if it is low carb/low sugar. My wife joined Weight Watchers the first of the year. I went on it with her. She has lost over 40 lbs-I've lost 35 lbs and have kept at this weight for 4 months with hardly any exercise since I reached my present weight (hurt my back and couldn't exercise). Again, the difference I believe is WW teaches healthy eating patterns without saying "you can't eat this or that".

I have for over three years now left my car in the garage if I can get there on my bike. I have a bad back and I have tramatic arthritis from old football and motorcycle injuries. that is why I ride a recumbent. I was overweight by 20 pounds when I started this but the weight loss wasn't the goal it was to fight the tramtic arthritis. The best I feel all day is when I'm on my bike.
However my son left for college in August and since then I lost the 20 lbs that riding everyday never got rid of. What has changed since my son left is I no longer eat after 3 pm. I have a bowl of cereal or a toasted bagel for breakfast with peanutbutter on it and whatever I desire for lunch... I stay away from fried food (except for when I'm in Indiana... you understand) and I try to be reasonable on balance and amounts. But what I believe really worked for me was to not eat late in the day. the wieght loss happened so quick after my son left for school that I went to my doctor fearing that something was wrong with me.
Doc said besides the bleeding heart that I was fine.

My dad had to ride everyday due to a bad ticker and used a stationary bike during the winters and set up his TV in front of his Air-dyne and watched the Price is Right... so I thought it would be nice to get him some of those video tapes for exercise bike riders that take you on a tour of National Parks... there are other riders who actually talk to you and point out the sights.
"Hey look over there Old Faithfull is spewing!"... Dad still would watch the Price is Right most of the week, claiming he could only handle a tour of Jellystone no more than once a week.
Nothing helps me on a stationary bike... 5 minutes and I'm going crazy... but down here I can ride just about every day but Hurricane season.
