  • The Father and Daughter Solution

Nope, not a Princess story, but a situation I was told about today.

Dad owns a house but has chosen to live outside the country. Rather than sell the house he rents it to his daughter Julie, who has one one son, 7, at a discount so she can afford to go to school. They live a peaceful existence as the daughter has finished two years in law school, going at nights after putting a full day at work. Everything is great.

But her sister and brother-in-law lose their home. Dad has the solution and invites the sister, husband and three kids to move in with Julie. Quiet has turned into chaos. Julies no longer has a private, quiet place to study as the kids play and fight and music or television blares all the time. Julie's grades take a serious turn to the south and she is considering quitting school because there just seems no point.

Dad is coming for a visit next week.

I would set rent for the other daughter 2.5 times (2:5) the current daughter's rent based upon occupancy loading and things will work themselves out for Julie one way or another.

PJHIndy, does this sound familiar like a house we know on the White River near Broadripple...

What irks me (maybe its too soon for the truth), DW was a 16-oval WIN specialist, yet the vast majority those boohooing for him, hardcarders & fans, alike are the same ones trying to kill anything with more than 9 deg banking & 4 corners, where Dan ultimately made his home...

I suspect sister and brother-in-law "los[t]" their home with full knowledge free or at least cheap lodging was going to be available and put in a commensurate effort to keep that from happening.

Daughter should tough out the semester and make other arrangements. It's nice Dad made the home available for her but I suppose fairness dictates the sister should be allowed to flop there too.

Dad will have a destroyed house on his hands in another year. There's no motivation for sister and her husband to take care of the house, and it won't take long for that to wear off on the kids too.

My opinion, as a Dad - Dad F'd up. Yes, it's his house but he's renting it to his daughter. The amount of the rent doesn't matter or have any impact on the daughter's status as the renter . He should at least have discussed it with everyone and set rules before anyone else moved in. Now he has a Grade A mess of his own making to deal with.

                Nope. No relations here.

The daughter is on probation after a really bad semester.
One more like it and she faces dismissal.
Apparently one of the options was to withdraw and start over next fall.
But if she does and the living conditions don't change then it is a no win situation.
