About damned time certain members of the RRHoF board put their snobbery and egos aside and gave KISS the nod. There are people already in the RRHoF that were influenced by KISS or got a big break from them in some fashion.

Nirvana-never really liked 'em, but like 'em or not their influence can't be denied. Legit. Also puts Dave Grohl in the RRHoF, which is cool.

And the whole earthquakin', heartbreakin', Viagra-takin', air-conditioner-shakin' E Street Band got in, too. Damned right!

It's just a shame that Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici couldn't be around to see it.

Or Eric Carr, for that matter. Or even Mark St. John.

I wonder if this will get Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley to agree to playing the induction ceremony with Ace Frehley (assuming this fracas about his house burning down doesn't land him in the pokey) and Peter Criss again?

You sure about the E Street Band?

For a second year, the Rock Hall implemented fan voting in choosing this year's inductees, which was available on its official site, Rolling Stone and USA TODAY, and generated nearly 1.4 million votes this year. The five artists with the highest number of votes (three of whom will be inducted) made up a fans' ballot, which counted as a single vote in choosing this year's honorees.

Among fans, Kiss (239,000 votes) and Nirvana (218,000) enjoyed easy victories. Two artists that failed to receive induction despite swells of public support were Yes (151,000) and Deep Purple (166,000), beaten out in the overall balloting by Hall & Oates (113,000), Peter Gabriel (111,000), Linda Ronstadt (85,000) and Cat Stevens (75,000).

And Yes and Deep Purple got passed over for 'Heart Like a Wheel' and 'Morning Has Broken?'

Rondstadt at least did do some rock n roll. But there are plenty of inductees who didn't.

              Yes.

Purple will be an interesting case. Nominally it's a fan vote, yes, but the RRHoF likes to get as much of the original lineup of an inducted band to perform as they can, and Ritchie Blackmore is kind of notorious for monkeywrenching such things.

E Street Band: Induction category: The Award for Musical Excellence

It means that it was the only way they could get them in.

The rules pretty much say that you are eligible for induction in the performer category 25 years after your first recording under your performing name. Problem in this case is that even as indispensable as the E-Streeters are to the whole Bruce Springsteen universe, that legend was made while the records were being released solely under the name of Bruce Springsteen. It was only in 1986, when the big live box set came out (Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Live 1975-85) that the E Street Band got such a mention. Then, the RRHoF inducted Bruce as a solo performer in his first year of eligibility. (How could they not?) Since the albums were all released only under the name Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band was not technically included, even though they WERE integral to that body of work. They simply weren't technically eligible yet.

Now, the time has elapsed, plus a couple of years, and what to do? They more than deserve the honor of induction, yet do you induct (as the live box set calls them ) Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, which is the only way they'd be eligible in the performer category (even though Bruce himself is already in), or just the E Street Band, who therefore are still technically ineligible for the performer category without Bruce? This other category gets them in. And perhaps more importantly, it gets The Big Man and Danny in.

Remember, also, that Bruce is not the only performer the E Street Band and/or its various members have famously backed up. Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, Bob Seger, and many, many others.

Hopefully this opens the door to future inductions of people like Randy Rhoads and Ronnie James Dio for similar "MVP" accomplishments.

When Deep Purple eventually gets in, that sort of gets Tommy Bolin in.

                      Excellent explanation, thanks.

Daryl Hall had some frank observations, good for him for being honest:

Is this something that you ever felt would happen?

I didn't think it would happen as long as the people who were in power stayed in power. I've always been sort of on the other side of the fence with the old guard and the powers-that-be. So it was a bit of a surprise to me. This turn of events and the way things are changing is very pleasant. I think it's the right thing and I think it validates something that needs to have a reason to be serious.

Why do you think the old guard was so opposed to you back in the day?

I haven't a clue. It's probably because they had their own opinions about what constituted exceptional music in that period of time and it was based on a lot of things that I wasn't really interested in. I have slightly different roots than most of the writers.

There really has been a reappraisal of your work in recent years, though.

I do believe so and that's a nice thing. All things change. Times move on and things get validated. The whole new generation of people are looking at me and John in a different way

You've been to previous induction ceremonies, right?

I inducted Smokey Robinson and I inducted the Temptations.

I imagine it'll be emotional to be back at that podium, but as an inductee and not just a presenter.

My emotions are mixed about it. I'm saving my thoughts about it. I don't think I'm gonna prepare anything. I'm gonna let the moment wash over me and see how I react to it. I think that's probably the best thing I could do, just be as honest as possible.

I don't know if you know this yet, but you're getting inducted alongside Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Cat Stevens, Kiss and Linda Ronstadt.
Well, those are all people who made significant contributions to late 20th century music.

I'm trying to imagine that all-star jam at the end of the night.

With that group, it'll be very hard to imagine. I wonder what Gene Simmons is going to do?

Are you a fan of Kiss?

I can't say that I am. I respect what they did, though. They did something pretty unique and I always respect uniqueness.

Hall and Oates? Yeah, for 'Rich Girl' and 'She's Gone' and 'Sara Smile' and for mostly unknown songs like this one:

Yusuf wrote the oft recorded "First Cut is the Deepest". That should be enough to get him in. Linda should have been in a long time ago, at least earlier than Madonna.

I can see an argument for Gabriel, definitely Nirvana, definitely Cat Stevens given the wider rubric. Hall & Oates, rofl, music for people who don't like music. KISS, bad Sweet ripoff with egregiously aggressive marketing, may as well bring in Twisted Sister.

It's a strong lineup. You may not like Hall & Oates or Kiss but they sold a ton of records. Speaking of Hall, he has a TV show called Live from Daryl's that is really neat. I'm not a huge fan of his, but respected him much more after watching a few. He invites a very eclectic mix of artists to his house in Upstate NY, plays some music and then they cook a dinner. He is a huge fan of soul music and it suits his voice much better than some of the 80s music he put out.

Nirvana was a no-brainer. Peter Garbriel, Cat Stevens & Linda Ronstadt all were hugely influential song-writers. I really, really like this entire group. The 12 year old in me loves the fact that the favorite band of nearly everyone my age back then, KISS, is finally getting in.
