  • Every day questions that need answering

This morning the Christmas tree needed water, so I took a water glass that was draining and filled it with water, watered the tree, and put the glass back in the drainer. Would you have put it back in the dishpan?
A book fell on my head, and I only have my shelf to blame.

I would have watered the tree, filled the glass back up with water and then drank it and placed it in the dishpan to be cleaned.

Who needs that kind of decision making stress that early in the morning.

      Whew that was close...

Best way to fill a hole in wood to be-rescrewed, for example where a door hinge is screwed into the door jam that has loosened throughout the years?

              That's not very green.

By drilling a hole in the wood you have irreversibly compromised the structural integrity of that piece of wood. You've destroyed the lignin bonds at the very least without even getting into aesthetics. Simply put, that wood is unfit to bear any load and any attempt to repair or even repurpose that wood is doomed to failure.

We all know that something is only as strong as its weakest part, and I'm betting there are other holes, cracks, and splinters in your house as well. By the time we find all of these you'll never be able to pay the code violation fines.

The only thing you can do is tear down your house and start again. I'm sorry but there's no other logical way forward.

Put one or more toothpicks in the hole, depending on how loose the screw is. They will provide filler and the screw will hold them in place. Cut them off flush with the hole entrance, done.

Take a water glass that is draining, fill it with water, pour the water into the hole, the wood willl absorb moisture and will swell thus eliminating the hole, put the glass back in the drainer.

When the wood drys out and shrinks so that the hole reappears, follow other instructions posted elsewhere in thread.

A bigger, longer screw. At least that's what she said.
