I can understand the guy taking every opportunity to charge the battery. But I can empathize with the person who called the cops on him. I pay to put gas in my car and this guy is filling his tank with my tax dollars. I'd see red.

You tap the guy on the shoulder and explain that he is not to do this in the future and don't waste the taxpayers money by prosecuting him this time.

They waited 10 days to charge him. That tells me either he was warned and did it again or this is not his first incident.

They should send him a bill for $.05 using a school employee that they pay for fifteen minutes of their time, give it to their bean counter that uses more pay time plus pay the meter postage the piece of paper and the envelope. Sounds crazy but not as bad as arresting the guy.

They estimated it was 5 cents worth. It doesn't matter. What they have to do is stake out policy now because there could come a time with more and more electric cars where those car owners may feel entitled to free charging. If they get that popular then they will have to pay for it. Might as well pound that into their skulls now.

So where do they draw the line? Laptops, tablets and cells take a fraction of the juice the Leaf takes but technically is is still stealing.

Good question. Laptops and tablets and even cell phones as smartphones could be considered as equipment needed for schools and work no different than a plugged in computer if they are being used for such activity. Many retail places consider such use as just part of doing business to attract customers. Interestingly a Gander Mountain Gun store in Rogers, MN installed charging stations in its parking lot without charge for electric cars. I thought that rather strange that a gun buying clientele would drive a Leaf or Prius. What I think went on is they got some kind of incentive to design a LEED building and the charging stations and bike racks garnered them cheap points toward that goal.

Why? Not all gun owners need an F350 dually or Suburban.

If you're going to drive 20 miles in 20 minutes, hunt and eat red meat you do.

Not all gun owners hunt. I don't. I don't have any problem with hunting-I just don't have it in me anymore.

All that for a nickel? I'll give them a nickel . Five pennies!

Yeah, I'm glad that cops have time to arrest a guy for stealing a nickel's worth of electrons. Next, they should bust that guy going 1 mph over the speed limit or the car that's parked an inch into a no-parking zone.

Typical behavior for an electric car owner. They are better than us...
