  • Atlanta Braves are moving again

The Atlanta Braves plan to build a new stadium in Cobb County and move there from Turner Field at the start of the 2017 season, team officials said Monday.

Braves executives John Schuerholz, Mike Plant and Derek Schiller, in a meeting with a small group of reporters, said the new ballpark will be built at the northwest intersection of I-75 and I-285 in the Galleria/Cumberland Mall area. They said the team has “secured” approximately 60 acres of land for the project.

The Braves said the stadium is projected to cost $672 million, including parking, land and infrastructure, and will be built in partnership with Cobb County.

Schiller said the Braves will be a “significant investor” in building the stadium but refused to disclose how much the team will spend. “At this point in time, we are working with Cobb County, and when those details of our exact arrangement become final, we will let you know,” Schiller said.

The Braves officials also declined to provide specifics regarding the public funding. “It is through Cobb County, and Cobb County will be responsible for delineating the various buckets of dollars,” Schiller said.

    1. The Braves currently play at Turner Field which was built for the '96 Olympics. They've been there a whole 17 years after moving from Fulton County Stadium where they spent 33 years after moving from Milwaukee.

    2. The Braves claim Turner Field needs 'hundreds of millions in upgrades' and their share would be $150 million ... which is how much they will put into the new stadium.

    3. Buried in all of this is the note that they will change their logo.

I thought you meant from Atlanta after moves from Boston and Milwaukee!

I wonder what the record is for shortest time in a new stadium? I know it's not any Chicago teams.

March 1976 open, Jan 2000 close, March 2000 demolition so 24 years - but - the ceiling was falling in, needed millions in repairs.

The HHH Metrodome and the Hoosier Dome also had short lifespans. I think less than 30 years.

The Humpty-Dump is still in operation, after a couple of roofs and a name change.

The Hoosier Dome was a placeholder, a real shot in the dark to land a big-time tenant. Obviously, it's not an ideal situation to build something temporary that costs so much. But hopefully the new one -- built with the future in mind -- will still be around and useful 50, 60 years from now.
No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

We can hope, but likely sometime in the next 10 years we will hear about the many "outdated" aspects of it and how lots of $$ are needed. Banker's Life Fieldhouse opened in 1999 and about 3 years ago the Pacers were talking about the many upgrades the place needed. Both facilities are considered very nice places and there aren't any known drawbacks to either one. Hopefully, you are right and they will still be around far into the future.

It's really a shame to see places not make it 20 years and teams are looking to build a new facility.

                    White flight!

The new stadium site is adjacent to Northern Fulton County, the current stadium is in Southern Fulton County. There is a secessionist movement in Northern Fulton County. In a nutshell the out numbered affluent white Republicans are tired of footing the bill for poor black Democrats.

I have clearly shown that I don't know anything about Atlanta.

...for another six weeks or so. Once the Vikings play their last home game, they will start tearing it down to make way for the new one.

Shame about Turner Field, I was just there in April. It instantly became one of my favorites, it's not overly retro, like most of the newer ones. Retro parks got, well, old after the first 2 or 3 that opened. I've been to a majority of the retro parks, after a few of them, they start looking the same. Only a few stand out, most due to the view of what's outside of the park.
My favorite, coincidentally, is Kauffman Stadium, the one closest to me. Clean, modernist lines, and since they're not trying to imitate the parks of the early 1900s, they accommodate the majority of their fans that arrive by car with a big parking lot. The newer retro park planners live in a fantasy world that most will use mass transit, forcing the majority of their fans to park blocks away.

The worst offender is Houston(sorry VF, I wish it wasn't so). The city that is home to the JSC, with a baseball team name inspired by it, they city that was the first word ever uttered by a human being while on another planetary body, that has many high tech companies, that is a leader in medical research, that had the first domed stadium in the world, now has a retro park with a STEAM LOCOMOTIVE??

The Metrodome in the Twin Cities opened in the spring of 1982 with major league double header pre-season baseball games. I was there, four teams in all. Not two teams playing twice. Twins played in one game and the Phillies in another. Damned if I can remember the other two as I type this. It was around April 1 and it was freezing and snowing outside. That would make it a 31-1/2 year run.

From Wikipedia: The Metrodome is the only venue to host a MLB All-Star Game (1985), a Super Bowl (1992), an NCAA Final Four (1992 & 2001), and a World Series (1987 & 1991).

Not sure of the HoosierDome's life span but I remember seeing the roof initially inflated the summer of '83 and my Trojans won a state title in Lucas Oil Stadium in '08. That's 25 years max. Probably a year less.
