I think I remember that the last guy off the bridge,

Why, he was still on the bridge, that has to be a
mystery, although I think I remember that the bridge
was known for movement... Called the Galloping

I believe the man on the man on the bridge was a newspaperman or something like that...
The bridge failed because the the plate girder roadway acted like an airfoil in the wind. Construction workers noticed this phenomenon while they were working on the bridge...and soon after it was opened, people would flock to it to drive across the span as it fluttered.
Leon Moisseiff(sp?), the chief engineer, had his reputation ruined by the failure, even though his colleagues, men like Joseph Strauss and David B. Steinmann spoke in his favor in an attempt to exonerate him. The common opinion among his colleagues was that Moisseiff couldn't have known that the deck was too thin, and that they would have done exactly as he did if they had built the bridge.
The collapse of the Tacoma Narrows bridge led to a rush retrofit of other similarly designed spans, most notably the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, which received trusses atop it's deck.
Bridge builders had never really considered aerodynamic factors until the collapse of Galloping Gertie...the replacement span has a much thicker truss layout below the roadway, and it was left an open web so that air can pass through it. The Narrows are notorious for high winds.

This video used to fascinate me when I was a kid. Whenever they had engineering disasters or any other show like that on the History Channel I'd be glued to the TV. This video is probably one of many that led me to engineering.Indianapolis 500: '95, '14
