  • Grambling grumbles...

The football team at Grambling is making a statement. The Shreveport Times reports that the team walked out of a meeting on Tuesday and didn't report to practice on Wednesday. They're unhappy with numerous things, including transportation, facilities and the … Continue reading

We decry Championship Subdivision teams for picking up a paycheck for getting humiliated by a BCS school. But sub par everything is the reality of not getting paid.

The latest is the head coach has been "reassigned" after the team boycotted a second a practice.

Grambling has had 1,200 and 1,500 mile Bus trips this year with the added insult of "missed" meals. Twenty plus hours on a bus and they can't even afford to stop at McDonalds!

This whole situation could have been avoided if Grambling St. could have stopped for some Happy Meals.

Jacksonville St. 1 Grambling St. 0 <--- score of tomorrow's game.

Grambling players were a no show for their bus trip today.

The back story on all of this is that the State of Louisiana has slashed funding for education which has resulted in a $2 million dollar shortfall in the athletic department budget.

"Grambling fired (former coach Doug) Williams in September after the Tigers (0-7, 0-4 SWAC) lost their first two games by a combined score of 71-19. Grambling went 1-10 last season.

Williams had raised funds through an alumni group and bought sorely needed new mats for the weight room, SI reported. The old mats presented safety hazards, but since the raised money had not gone through the school's foundation, the school president and athletic director ordered the new mats to be stored in another building, according to SI.

Williams was fired a week later."

Grambling State football players complained of mold and mildew in facilities, having to pay for Gatorade out of their own pockets and even said which assistants they thought would make a good interim coach after the firing of Doug Williams in a letter to

A lot of dirty laundry (literally) aired in this article.

From what I read, there are people willing to donate to the football program but the Admin insists all $ goes into the general fund for all athletics....hence, no donations.

                    Reality.

In the bad old days, blacks in the South had the choice of attending these schools or of trying their hand up north (often in the Big 10). Many were woefully unprepared by the education system to go north.

These schools had their own parallel fan bases, stadiums, traditions, and everything. Successful black people supported their alma maters.

                    That was 60 years ago.

Today these schools, as schools, let alone athletic programs, serve no purpose whatsoever. In all but 4 southern states, most blacks attend the same general institutions as their while compatriots. In other words, the most blacks 18-22 in college in, say North Carolina are going to NC State, UNC, and so on, not NC A&T or NCCU. These schools are vestigial remnants of a (happily) bygone era.

In sports, young black athletes have the same choices as young white athletes. Caught a look at LSU's team photo? Its no longer an issue.

So the level of play at these schools is getting lower and lower. They are technically I-AA or D-II, but in reality, they are well below that in level of play. Its a bunch of kids that got no looks elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the alumni that once supported this deal are getting older and older, and dying off. Their children, and their children's children, support the same general institutions as their white neighbors do. LSU. Georgia. Florida State. Texas. UNC. Clemson. Etc.

It is time for the SWAC to go the way of the Negro Leagues.
