  • Think Pink gone too far?? (please keep an open mind)

Please let me preface by saying this: I am ALL for cancer awareness of all kinds. Breast, lung, pancreatic, you name it. It has claimed several members of my family, and it's an insidious disease that needs to be cured in my lifetime and hopefully will (I am 33, so they have time). I participate in the Mt. Vernon Walk for Life every year, doing a small part to help.

That said, I also know a bit or two about marketing. There's such a thing called "sign blindness"...That's a term that originated from the overuse of signage in public places. Effectively, people become blind to advertising because it is so frequent that they just tune it out with their eyes/ears.

Are we reaching that point with the whole "Pink October" movement? Again, I don't want to be called cruel for saying it. I think it's great that pink has become a rallying cry (color) for breast cancer awareness. I know how important it is to find a cure. But it is just EVERYWHERE now. And I fear that it has gotten so big that people are going to lose the meaning of the message.

Yesterday the NFL had their "pink" debut, along with college teams Saturday. It has been going on for at least 5 years now en masse...But I saw the first sign of "we may have gone too far" with:

PINK PENALTY FLAGS IN THE NFL. Yes, pink flags for the refs. Several times yesterday, games were stopped b/c a player's pink hand towel (that had fallen onto the field) was mistaken for a flag on a certain play. Even the tv commentators were saying, "this is confusing, let's draw the line at penalty flags". Personally I think the NFL will quietly switch back to yellow flags next week...

But it's all part of a bigger point. The Komen Foundation has done a ton to raise awareness for breast cancer research and that is awesome. But I feel the message may be getting watered down. Also, other cancers are just as deadly. More women die every year of lung cancer statistically, but we don't have a month for that.

Also, in racing, where there used to be one car painted pink in support, there are now several (in NASCAR, there were at least 4 I saw during the Nationwide race)

Another sign to me was "National No Bra Day" coming up...a lot of women in the comment section on a certain website were like "um, no. That would be painful, impractical, etc"

I just want to know if anyone shares my views. I want ALL CANCER gone! Including breast cancer. And I love the pink thing, but everything has its tipping point.

Remember when yellow ribbons were all the rage? Don't see those anymore.

I do agree that the message eventually gets lost if it starts getting attached to too many things. Over saturation.

I do remember those as a kid...they were everywhere. Now someone younger than I probably has no idea what they stood for. Even I am a bit fuzzy, I think it was for POWs/MIAs until they came home? Or just soldiers in general?

Edit, it was originally for the Iran Hostage situation...had to search for it. But also used for more general "till they all come home" purposes

Our local Pop Warner team wore pink socks this weekend and a couple of players had pink-dyed streaks in their hair. So to answer your question -- yes.

I really hope that some day we can have an hour, a day, a week or a month for just overall cancer awareness.
          Have a very blessed day!

I think everyone is now "aware" of cancer.

Pink is the new black, except between Memorial Day and Labor Day when it's white. Or is it the new gray...I'm confused.

And we discussed this last year, IIRC. "Proctober" has been coopted.
            It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...

It is a matter of everyone falling all over each other to be PC. Pink Correct.

It doesn't help that the Susan G. Komen foundation, largely at the front of this, is mostly a scam. It is one of THE worst charities out there in terms of having your money go to the actual cause at hand.

Yeah, the pink stuff doesn't bother me, but the penalty flags were clearly a mistake that they should fix before next week's games.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I believe all of the pink stuff is simply an NFL marketing campaign directed at women.

As a marketing campaign, it does seem to be working well for them (the NFL, that is).

Well, they did air an ad during yesterday's game, showing testimony from a woman who said she took a breast exam specifically because of the NFL's efforts in a previous year -- and she found a lump that has since been cured. It appeared to be a true story and not just a dramatization.

Although it certainly could have a positive effect on the NFL among women, I would reject the notion that it's "simply" for that purpose. You can genuinely care about something while you benefit directly from it.

I have lost a friend to breast cancer, but I agree, I don't like so much pink being displayed at football games, and it has nothing to do with how I feel about b.c research.
                          No one opposes that.

Too bad it can't be another color, it makes me glad the Colts have their bye in October.
