And when you are finished with it you can sell the barrel to Bushmill's.

I just sent a link to that article to one of my friends. His response was, "It's cheaper at Costco".

        He was being serious.

edit - And he backs it up with evidence:

If you send that to Nora she might show up on your doorstep.

I saw a horse trailer loaded-up with Jack in barrels at Sturgis a few years ago behind their tent. Thought it was the most expensive trailer in town.

It's not a bad for a mixer, but it's awful to drink neat. I can't believe the public didn't even blink about them watering it down to 80 proof. Give me some Wild Turkey 101 or Old Weller Antique any day of the week over Jack Daniels.

                      I don't think it's "awful", mostly I think it's overpriced.
+1 for the preference for Wild Turkey 101, I also like George Dickel #12 (90 proof).
Then again, I like good ol' white label Beam and Old Grand-Dad (80 and 100 proof bottlings), so what do I know?

Re JD's dropping their ABV, all the high volume distillers have standardized their main brands at 80 proof, to stretch production (victims of their own success) and keep at bay the modern temperance movement that reacts to 90+ proof like it were an "assault weapon".
Per wikipedia, JD was an early adopter, lowering to 80 proof in 1987. I don't think they had the same high-$$$ cache then, so less uproar than for Makers Mark earlier this year. JD's Single Barrel Select (subject of this thread) I think is 90 proof.

I dont have champagne tastes or a champagne budget.

I was always a Jim Beam fan.

I often heard if you're making mixed drinks the budget stuff is just fine.

So I always went with the budget stuff

I guess it makes a little more sense after reading the thread and finding out it's still full of whiskey... But it's been 33 years since I've talked to Jack...

The price sounds outrageous -- but then add up how much you've spent on any alcohol over the years. Thousands of dollars (literally) pissed away, but over time instead of all at once.

At least I pissed away a slightly smaller amount of money by sticking with (soda) pop. But even that is a bit dismaying.

Per JD's website, buyers get the whiskey from the barrel cut to 90 proof and bottled as their Single Barrel Select (240-260 x 750ml bottles) and the empty barrel it was in as a keepsake. Costco $8500 / 250 = $34/bottle and the "free" barrel.

I don't know if I go through more than 4-5 bottles of bourbon a year. The barrel would be a 50 year supply, unless you're a "Welcome Race Fans!" house next to IMS . Maybe a bargain for you and your descendents as you lock in today's price.
