  • 2020 Olympics: Tokyo

The 32nd Olympic Games will be in Tokyo.

The Japanese capital won a final-round vote over Istanbul and will host an Olympics for the second time in 2020. Tokyo also held the Games in 1964. Tokyo, which billed its bid as “a safe pair of hands,” won with 60 votes to Istanbul’s 36 from International Olympic Committee members.

I actually would have liked to have seen it go to Istanbul, and if not that, then I would have liked Constantinople to get them.

Having an Olympics in Turkey, would be an insult to the Greek origins of the event.

In any event, good for Japan. Whatever country wants to bankrupt itself with this ho-ha is fine by me, as long as its not mine.

If they had voted a year ago it would have gone to Istanbul, but the recent civil unrest reversed the vote.

The Olympics lose a massive amount of money and **** off a bunch of people. I'm not sure "win" is the term I'd use for becoming the host city.

Coincidentally, I traveled to Tokyo in my first international trip exactly ten years ago today.

It's a truly amazing city that will always hold a special place in my heart. If you've never been there, go.

Tokyo isn't building any new permit venues for the games and the temporary ones are going to be mostly for the outdoor venues. They are also not making every event take place in petty buildings, here is the building indoor volleyball will be played in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fileiffer-Ariake.jpg

Boston is considering bidding to host the 2024 Olympics. The plan would be for it to be either Greater Boston or even New England as a whole, with some events hosted in satellite cities like Manchester, Providence, and Hartford. We might need to add some temporary facilities, but we could pull it off without a major construction initiative, especially if the Revolution ever manage to get their own stadium in Revere or Somerville.

Any city, though, that has to basically do a bare-metal build to host the Games is just taking on debt for minimal gain.

I reckon Istanbul will get it for 2024. Can't see an American city getting it; the IOC is still scarred by 1996 and 1998.

Istanbul is a Greek city though...well, it was at the time.

Good news for the wrestling fans though. The IOC announced that wrestling will be back in the 2020 (and 2024) games. The popularity of wrestling in Japan worked in it's favor.

Wow, two sane decisions in quick succession. Nice!

Baseball will not be back though. Too bad, as baseball is huge in Japan.

Tokyo won't go bankrupt. I think they will thrive just like the LA Olympics.

Security costs have skyrocketed since then.
