Yep. That is how it works. I lived in a big old farmhouse in the middle of harvested corn fields in the ‘78 blizzard. The fields ended up with an inch or three on them as the wind wiped them almost clean. A rise, a tree, anything would create deep drifts. The pine trees at the drive left six to eight feet of snow in the driveway. Fences were still in use on the farms and the roads ended up with eight feet high and more drifts.
We had a bunch of house guests and had a grand old time. I made some snow shoes and walked about five miles to a small store. The owners lived upstairs and no one was getting there to buy the shelves clean. I filled my big pack with chow and of course beer.
They broke numerous snow plows and were not getting close. My employer started not to believe we could not get out. I said, OK, come and get me. Four hours later they called and apologized.
I stood above my Beetle on the drift and saw the wind blew & whipped around it and it had a ring of bare ground all around it. I dropped in daily to start the engine.
I’m staying home for this one too but I don’t think we’ll get that much snow. It’s going to be super cold and that’s bad enough. I did just pick up our X Country skis from the shop and am ready.
I am very concerned about the feral cats I’ve been feeding and built insulated shelters for. They haven’t used them much and I hope they are smart enough to get in them. If they hang out too long in a bad hiding spot I guess ten below could kill them.

    Sorry for the long read.

We had our snow from this storm heading east yesterday all day ending at about 2 AM this morning. We got about 9 inches of snow at our house. Streets were already plowed before 8 AM. It was -11 degrees this morning and it was below 0 all day yesterday. Today was calm and sunny but cold. The so-called blizzard won't happen until tomorrow when the winds will pick up. It didn't happen while it was snowing. I'm not sure it will be all that bad but we are faced with 3 days more of a high below zero.

Hopefully this is my head playing tricks on me and nothing more, but our forecast sounds an awful lot like what they were saying on Indianapolis TV in late January 1978, a few days before...
... only this time the forecast was right Cold AF, lots of wind, hardly any snow. 50s next week!

        • After all the big snow predictions I look out this morning and see it’s a deep 1”. Thanks OK with me. Thermometer reads -10.

          • Not okay with me. The one part of this forecast I wanted was the snow.

            • I was looking forward to more snow too. But with the extreme cold, people traveling etc I’m good with the low amount.

                • My daughter and family cancelled a planned driving trip from Pittsburgh, PA to our house for Christmas. Our son and family did drive up from La Crosse, WI. The roads are plowed but bad and they probably will stay that way in sub-zero weather through Wednesday. Very slippery with black ice. The wind is not that bad or bad as the news media made it out to be.

                    • 1° yesterday's high. 4° now. Normally that would be no big deal. If the furnace didn't shut off at 3am. But there's light at the end of the tunnel, repairman will be here at 5 today.

                      • My brother started OTR truck driving at the start of December. I checked in with him yesterday. He was parked at a depot in Mankato, MN waiting for the roads to reopen.

                          • The usually reliable electric power company here is having rolling blackouts. I was without power from 8AM until 2PM. It might be Christmas Eve, but I am not having Christian thoughts toward whatever [email protected]@hole ordered a rolling blackout that lasted that long that put a lot of the county in the cold.

Where are you, even heard the Atlanta area, and Nashville area are having Rolling Blackouts, had to postpone a football game in Tennessee because of the blackout.

I'm in Extreme South GA, we never have Snow...But it was 18 degrees last night, was surprised there wasn't snow. For someone who was raised in South Florida to South Georgia about 5 Years ago, and haven't seen a REAL BLIZZARD in Ages, saw it snow quite a bit a few days after moving to South GA, but haven't seen it since.

My last Blizzard, Indiana December '99, visiting family for Christmas, I don't know if any of you Hoosiers remember it, it was further North.
