Anybody getting one? I am for sure.

While it isn't a huge upgrade from the original ipad (a lot of what I've been reading is that a lack upgrade in the display to retna is dissappointing), but I don't care. If I always wait for the newest and best thing, I'll never buy anything!

The iPad 2 has the exact same pixel density (326 ppi) as the iPhone 4. Does the screen look as nice? No, it probably doesn't. It has a slightly higher resolution than the iPhone 4 (1024x768 vs 960x640), but that difference is pretty small and is well more than offset by the much smaller screen of the iPhone 4. Simply put, the smaller the screen, the less resolution you need to achieve the same image quality.

But when Apple refers to the "Retina" display, they're only referring to the 326 ppi, which is the same on both devices. Their claim was that their screen exceeded the limit of pixels that the human retina can see, as claim that has proven false. Perhaps that is why they're not advertising the iPad 2 as such:

Update (6/14): Discover’s Phil Plait published a post disagreeing with Soneira’s assertions, and we’ve published Soneira’s full statement. The iPhone 4’s screen may be the best mobile display yet, but its resolution does not exceed the human retina, as Steve Jobs claims. The math just doesn’t add up, said Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, […]

This is simply not true. iPad2 has the same display as the original iPad and is 132 ppi. iPhone4 is 326 ppi as you have stated. http://blog.gsmarena.com/how-does-th...in-comparison/

As for the original posters question of is anybody getting one? No I am holding out for iPad3 (assuming it has a significant bump in display quality) which if rumors are true will be out this fall. iPad2 is simply a stop gap to keep the specs ahead of new tablets like the Motorola Xoom and would be more aptly named iPad 1.4.

Hmm... These people are dirty liars, then:

Apple iPad 2 is the successor of the popular iPad. It comes with iOS 4.3, dual-core A5 1GHz chipset, 9.7 inch display, 8.8mm thinner body, both front and back side cameras, 1080p HD video out, Wi-Fi, 3G, AT&T & Verizon connectivity, 16GB/32GB/64GB memory storage, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI out, iMovie, Garage band, FaceTime apps, AirPlay enhancement, and more. Check out the full specifications, launch details and pricing information of the Apple iPad 2 here.

What makes you think Apple will go off its typical 1 year refresh cycle to introduce the ipad3 in fall 2011? Wonder what the cost would be if the retina was introduced? I'm sure it would increase significantly. What about the battery life duration if the retina was introduced? The only way i see another ipad being introduced this year is if it was ipad that isn't a replacement to the ipad2 but upgraded our pro version.

Also, did you a little read up on the Verizon 3G thing for ipad2. Apparently, it is true Verizon will offer a no contract service like ATT, but it will charge a $35 activation fee for everytime you start the service. Not sure if I'm going to get the 3G version, but if I do, I'll get ATT.

I am going to check out the playbook if it finally arrives. It will do Android aps, and I can tether it to my Torch for data.

                  With regards to Android tablets...

A lot of people have figured out that Android 3.0 can be installed on a Nook Color. They can often be found on sale for $200. Obviously it isn't near as fast as the iPad 2, but $200 for a quality tablet is a pretty good bargain.

Or they're simply bad at math. If I calculated correctly, a 9.7 inch diagonally measured screen at 326dpi would have a resolution of about 2529 x 1897, not 1024 x 768. But reversing the calculations, a 1024 x 768 screen at 132dpi comes out to almost exactly 9.7 inches diagonally.

Probably just lazy "bloggers". Here are the official Apple tech specs backing up the difference in resolution for iPad 2 vs iPhone 4:

Some people think Apple wants to move iPad release cycle to the fall to boost holiday sales. Like I said it is just a rumor and maybe just wishful thinking since the new iPad 2 falls short of rumors. Hadn't thought about an iPad Pro model that is an interesting idea following along the lines of how they sell iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 together now.

$35 each time you activate a no contract data plan? That is crazy.

I have two iPads (me and wife) now and am seriously considering getting an iPad 2 and recycling my iPad to my second daughter. Number one daughter and son already have iPads. The new iPads are thinner and lighter, have front and back cameras, are twice as fast, and graphics for games are 9 times faster. If the iPhone 4 didn't have the retina display you would not be disappointed with the current iPad display. It is still very good. The iPad has now been out nearly a year and the Android market is just now feebly introducing models that are unfinished (Android 3.0). Apple has 65,000 native iPad apps to the Android market's less than 100. I'm not talking scaled up smartphone apps here. iPad users have long ago gone beyond using those. There is no competitor to the iPad yet.

Usually with Apple you can go every other generation and do fine. For example, I didn't buy the first iPhone but waited for the 3G. I bought an iP4 and will skip this summer's iP5, waiting for next year's iP6. Same deal with the iPad - if I had one, now I'd probably wait for the iPad3.
