My Coach Sucks

The best thing about coaching youth sports -- especially at the competitive level -- is the parents of the kid who isn't the star assume that the coach hates the kid and is not playing him to purposely hurt him.

My experience after coaching 7-8 years of baseball and football was that was the case in baseball, not in football.
There were striking differences between the 2 sports.
Baseball was 75%+ white, middle to upper middle class with more than few well-to-do parents.
Kids were fine, many parents were pains in the ass.
Football was 75%+ black, many from single parent homes in a not so ritzy area. The vast majority of the white kids were middle class, a few upper-middle at best.
Kids were fantastic, parents were great. I can only think of 1 parent who was an aggravation, and that wasn't over playing time (He got a case of the ass because his wife overheard his son referred to as "a dummy". Son (14 years old), immediately after being sent in to return a punt and being told "If it's not right to you, let it go", ran 20 yards to muff a bouncing ball and give it back to the other team. Even though his son acted like a dummy and his wife had no business being where she was when she heard the comment apologies were made and the kid remained on the team.

You see, I had a golf coach that didn't know how to coach golf. He did not give us any swing help all year, and instead of practicing out at the course, we were playing basketball in the gym. I think I can really say that "my coach sucks."

My teammates and I would come out on the weekends and practice on our own, sometimes a 6 hour day, just to help ourselves at golf because we were getting little to none during the week. It was no wonder we hadn't won a tournament in 10 years before last year.

I've had some good soccer coaches throughout the years who did an excellent job.

Saw this title and for sure thought it was going to be about Bob Chuggins. This is an actual quote from Bob about one of his players just a couple days ago..

"Because he didn't play anyways and hasn't played. The truth of the matter is that he's been a nonentity. We started him to try and get some other guys motivated and he did work hard in practice for a while, but look at his career stats."

Rumor going around is the actual reason Bob is pissed is that he heard the kid's been going to class.
