I thought Canada was more open-minded and progressive than us?

There's another thread around here somewhere where this has been discussed and the consensus, naturally, is that the restriction is ********. Keep in mind however that the banning is by a self-regulating broadcast industry organization and has nothing to do with any government ban, though the Standards Council probably feels that it is reflecting "community standards " . Stations with balls have continued to play the song and the Standards Council has said that it will react against stations on an individual basis where it receives complaints.

Political correctness gone crazy, especially when the umbrella organization for the radio stations themselves is the group advising its members not to play this song. Frankly, as long as they keep the drum sequence from the opening, I could care less whether I hear the song's lyrics since I have never been a fan of Money for Nothing, though I am a big admirer of Dire Straits.

It also may or may not be worth noting that Knofler has been changing that line for several years omitting the word in question.

That said, there are plenty of songs out there significantly worse than this one. I wonder how hard it would be to get this organization to ban "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel based on content?

Funny thing is I just heard this song the other day and thought to myself how surprising it was that it's still played without censoring.

That said, anyone who actually knows the song knows that it's not gay's that are being disparaged, it's simple minded people who are jealous of rock stars who are being disparaged. If anything it's microwave and tv installers who should be offended.

I like Dear God and XTC is probably my favorite band ever...that song should be played in constant rotation with This World Over, maybe things would finally change for the better...or not. Who am I.

Money For Nothing has been playing since 85 and they're just now getting around to bitch1ng about it? Yeesh.

Our tastes run parallel much of the time but XTC just never grabbed me. The lyrics of that song really bug me. But like I said, my radio has these 2 really neato buttons that allow me too find other songs that dont annoy me
The few times Ive seen Andy Partridge on TV he comes off as the coolest guy in the room if you know what I mean.
And its true if you listened to the lyrics on Money For Nothing even once in THE PAST 25 YEARS (!!) youd figure out whos the talking about the little faggot

Hope the news is good in Nashville tonight.

We got one in Lexington SC tonight for sort of the same thing

I find them troubling too, but in a different way.

                          But don't ban it.
