Congresswoman Giffords Shot - no politics please

A gunman shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, and a number of bystanders at an event outside a Safeway in Tucson, according to a local law enforcement official.

Local news reports and eyewitnesses said the congresswoman, who had just won a close reelection fight in November, had been shot in the head during a "Congress on Your Corner" event. The spokesman of the University Medical Center in Tucson told CNN that Giffords is still in surgery.

In all, local news reports say that over 12 people were shot. Police have taken the suspected shooter into custody, though no details were available on the suspect..

The admiration I hear from her colleagues indicates she is a terrific lady who was able to work both sides of the political aisle.

Reports say she's still alive.

She's my congressperson and I met her a few times. I can confirm that she's a terrific lady, and I'm just shaking at the senselessness of it all.

There are conflicting reports on that. The latest I've heard is that she is in surgery. It will take some time to sort out what happened.

What is wrong with some people? As much as I don't like my Rep. I couldn't even imagine shooting them being the answer.

Unbelievable. Now they are saying multiple fatalities BUT the Congresswoman is alive. Just horrible.

Hearing that her offices have been repeatedly vandalized. That seems to really paint a target on her, hindsight is obviously that her security should have probably reflected that. Horrible.

Capitol Police in DC just sent notice to all Reps on the details of the incident, that they are involved in the investigation, and that they are to tighten up their security in all aspects of their life - public & private.

A Senator who's name I missed, on FOX saying the congresswoman was able to respond to commands and she says they think she may well live.

I heard a child was killed too. One report has 6 dead and 18 wounded. WTF????

KOLD is reporting five are dead.
