  • A Letter To The Fans from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

With one of the most exciting regular seasons now completed and the playoffs about to begin, let me first thank you and all NFL fans for your incredible support. Many fans have been asking me where we stand on signing a new collective bargaining agreement with the player's union. Let me update you and be clear at the outset:

I know we can and will reach an agreement.

My goal as Commissioner now is to help our teams and players find a solution that is fair to everyone and ensures that football becomes more popular, accessible, and fun. We want the next decade to be the best yet for our fans, and I'm ready to work day and night to make that happen.

We've come a long way. Compare where we are today with 10 years ago. From player accountability to player safety, more and better television coverage, upgrading the in-stadium experience, innovations like the RedZone channel, the Draft in prime time and playing the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl, we are focused on doing what's best for the players, teams, and fans. My priority is and always will be the game and the fans who love our game.

The NFL is great because fans care deeply about it. Economic conditions, however, have changed dramatically inside and outside the NFL since 2006 when we negotiated the last CBA. A 10 percent unemployment rate hurts us all. Fans have limited budgets and rightly want the most for their money. I get it.

    CONT'D: http://content.usatoday.com/communit...fl-cba-talks/1

This fan is concerned about the CBA & next season, and doesn't want anything to do with an 18 game schedule, 16 is perfect.

We've talked about the schedule at length, and just know that there are many of us who would much rather have 2+18 -- including many of us who are helping the NFL pay its bills.

    But I know it's a divisive issue.
No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

I don't really care one way or the other about 16 or 18 games. I do however want the CBA to be resolved and there be a season next year, which despite Goodell's optimism isn't appearing likely.

And there are many of us who think adding 2 more games dilutes the meaning of every game and the product as a whole.

Mopars: Thanx for posting this. I had not seen until now, and throughly enjoyed it. It is a public sector example of American political double-speak...We appreciate your support fans...In other words...You're gonna' get bent over, and gonna' like it...Besides, we're really doin' it FOR the fans...We know money is tight, and we're gonna' do ANYTHING we can to keep to give you, the fan, the best product we can...Yeah, we'll use scabs, and then dump them when we're done with 'em...But they will get the benefit of being part of the NFL experience(SCREWED)...Yeah, so sit back and enjoy your football, while we shoot ourselves in the head...
My major malfunction is...I want the people I love and respect to live forever...The problem is...Life don't work that way...

It's definitely an interesting read, Jack. I'm not sharing his enthusiasm for this thing getting worked out, but I appreciate him putting this & some of the details I did not previously know, out there.

I absolutely believe that the rookies shouldn't be compensated to the point they are, and that the proven veterans should be compensated for their commitment to the sport.

I have no idea off the top of my head what Vince Young has made in his time, but it's way too damn much for what he has not accomplished.

                Nor do I.

I rather have 18 regular season games then suffering thru 4 worthless preseason games. 2 of which I have to pay for.

And although every fan is important, I do believe that sponsors and season-ticket holders should hold somewhat more sway in the discussion than people who watch games on TV for free every week.

You said it. Add to it that football ain't baseball. Baseball players don't go through seasons taking multiple beatings as a natural part of the game.

Ren: Which sponsors are you referring to? The sponsors at the stadium like Speedway, the official gas and go of the Indianapolis Colts, or the sponsors on TV like Cialis, the official down and out of the NFL...Just sayin' there's 65,000 at the game, and MILLIONS watching the game...People who watch the game at home represent the real bread and butter of the NFL...Television is where the money is, and that's one of the key issues of this firestorm. The NFLPA wants a piece of TV, and the owners are gonna resist it with everything they've got.

My guess is that the NFL makes far more money off of their TV package than the butts in the seats. Those people sitting at home watching games for free are important to the advertisers who pay the bills. Not arguing...just pointing it out.

I'm a season ticket holder. I'd rather just sell my preseason tickets for whatever loss I have to take, than water down a sport that is near perfect as is.

The right thing to do would be to keep it at 16/4 and cut the cost of the 4 in half, but we all know that's never going to happen.
