  • Christmas Traditions

Well, I did my yearly tradition of watching "A Christmas Story," and "Scrooge," the one starring Alastair Sim.

Just a suggestion. For my Christmas presents, I don't bother to wrap them. I put them in a bag, cover the top with Christmas wrap. But, here is where I do something different. I do not buy those Christmas bag from the store. Instead, I go to Walgreens, Jewel Food Stores, etc. and I buy one of those canvas like bags that are used to carry your shopping goods. The bag itself, is a present.

We don't do presents. None whatsoever. Instead we go on a road trip for the holiday. Much better use of our funds IMO

A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of my traditions, which I have done. I DVR'd it last year so now it's done at my convenience. The daily task of putting ornaments back on the tree knocked off by the cats is another tradition although sadly there's only one cat doing that now.

Christmas Eve is bigger for me than Christmas Day. That day involves dinner and an evening spent at Mom's with the family. All kinds of good eats afterwards too. Usually the midnight Mass service but this year it will be at 6pm. Capped off that night by returning home and with all the lights out in the house quietly admiring the tree with Christmas music playing softly in the background.

Watching whatever game, of any sport that was on, on that given year...With my Uncle and my Father...Also speculating on NEXT year's Indy 500, and talking about the race we saw in May...TOGETHER...Uncle was a Mario fan, me and Dad were Foyt fan's, and my Grandmother would pop in and out, talkin' smack about the Unser's...And my Mom and my Aunt would hold court in the kitchen, saying loud enough to hear in the den, "Boy, they love that race, don't they?"

P.S. My Mom and Aunt loved the race, as least as much as we did...

I watched Elf with my Dad.
Neither of us had ever seen it.

When I was a kid the traditions were Christmas Day at my Mom's side where gifts were very practical, sweaters, coats. etc and Grandma's Betty Crocker picture perfect ham.

Christmas Eve, early dinner at home with my Dear Aunt and Uncle. Dinner was usually this wonderful tuna melt sandwich... opened gifts, one year we were thrilled to get hooded sweatshirts and Mom's most ingenious stocking stuffers. After we had Christmas, we walked to my Dad's family and Grandma and Grandpa's. Usually fun gifts.. cause Grandma worked at a local jot im down store.

Most fav mem? Christmas Eve at G & G's We kids would be all ramped up, but then things would get quiet, the lights would go out except for the tree, and we would sing Silent Night acapella, and also a verse in German. It was many years before I could get thru that song with out tears.. and it can still catch me at times...

Most of my immediate family is gone.. and so are the traditions....

Our lost tradition is Christmas Caroling... we use to do it every year. I think it's been at least a decade since I've even heard of it being done by somebody else.

We used to have quite a few. church 2 or more times on christmas eve depending on the day. Going out and looking at lights in our little town. And a bunch of other things. Now I moved to Indy and got married. We spend christmas eve at someone's house probably watching top gear and then have a nice store bought dinner. Then go home. Christmas day get up and drive to my sister's in columbus for the day then rush home. The whole time being called on the phone by the other parents asking us how the day is going and they feel bad we can't be there but they "understand why" It's only getting worse every year.

Christmas Day breakfast, dishes cleaned before gifts opened. Drove the kids nuts when they were younger, as it did my sisters and me when we were little, but now my adult children also cherish the tradition.

Breakfast is usually french toast or blueberry pancakes with bacon or sausage patties and fresh fruit.

Time for new traditions for us. No kids this year and a new home.
                              Everything is different this year.
We'll see what happens but it's gonna be great.
