Wow, that's a tough choice. The first act of "Saving Private Ryan" was just staggering, and the film explores many facets of war, good and bad.
On the flip side, the opening monlogue in "Patton" is a great scene, and it has always been among my favorites.
In the end, I'm going to go with "Patton" for it's oblique relationship to Indy car racing. The soldier slapped by General Patton was played by actor Tim Considine, who I had the pleasure to get to know when i was working in the IMS press room back in the Compuserve/RIS days. Tim is a real renaissance man, and among his interest is auto racing. He wrote a book about all of the Americans who ever raced in F1. That tips the scales for me.
