  • Diving into the endzone is excessive celebration? (NCAA)

I'm watching Ole Miss vs LSU... Ole Miss player dives into the endzone and gets called for excessive celebration. Announcers say that next year the penalty will negate the touchdown! Wha?!?

They've had that rule for at 2-3 years now... maybe longer.

I have no problem with it.

To each his own, I guess. It seems pretty harmless to me.

I felt the same way as you, Gomer. At first, I thought he was diving for the pylon to beat the defender. I guess I don't see this as being worse than a defender striking his incredible hulk pose after a sack, which seems to happen all the time.

The posing after every play gets on my nerves too.

The No Fun League and now the No Celebration Anytime Association.

I thought sports and games were played for fun. Trying to make them a metaphor for life and insisting on everybody toeing the line on every little thing that might posibly bother someone else is getting ridiculous. Sportsmanship is important. But it's poor sportsmanship to complain if the opponent does a little celebrating to express their happiness when they score.

I think if you sack the QB and he fumbles and you pick the ball up and run it in for 6, you deserve a little me time.
But posing and inventing a dance move becasue you made a sack is over the top.

Good job. You sacked the QB. Ironically enough, THATS WAHT YOURE SUPPOSED TO DO!!!!

I can't say it any better than the legendary Paul Brown. "Play the game like you been there before."

The funniest QB sack I ever saw was when Mark Gasteneau sacked Boomer Esiason. While Boomer fumbled the ball Gasteneau was too busy with his "Hey look at me" celebration to notice that the ball was only a few feet from him. The idiot could have picked up the ball and ran a ways with it, maybe to the endzone.

Didn't an Oklahoma halfback break his collarbone diving into the endzone within the last several years? I don't recall whether or not it was in celebration.

                      I'm good with TEAM celebrations.

                      I hate individual celebrations.

I don't really care about diving into the end zone. There are certainly more annoying things than it, but it isn't a new rule. Been around for a bit.

Thats a pretty good way of boiling it all down.

But is diving into the endzone really crossing that line? What if the player dives into the endzone, gets up, walks over to the ref and hands him the ball?

IMO, I thought it was a act of taunting. He looked back at the DB and dove into the endzone saying "look at me, you can't catch me, now I'm going to show off". I agree with TD, team celebrations are good but individual crap like last night needs to go.

Also, did I hear Gary Daniels correct last night when he said next year that the unnecessary jumping into the endzone will result in a NO touchdown??
