  • Grocery Prices

OK savvy TF shoppers, I have a question sparked in part by the egg thread. One poster mentioned he got whatever eggs were under $1 a dozen. So my question to all you is, do you know how much things like bread, milk and eggs cost and does it matter in your purchasing choices?

I remember shopping with my Dad once and he was asking me all this and I had no idea. From my point of view, when I need milk, I need milk and I am not driving 5 miles to different store to maybe save a quarter. Therefore I grab a gallon of the store brand and move on. Am I the only one who sees it like this?

        Absolutely, yes.
I won't spend more money driving around to save $.50 on a carton of eggs, but in my local supermarket there is a large range of choices, from generic to their 'house' brand to the highly advertised national brands. I often get the cheapest USAican grown commodities available, but will spend more for brands that I know through experience are better.

Yeah, I know what the prices are. First I buy what I must have, usually just a few items. Then, for the would-like-to-haves, I buy what's priced well, because I know what things average at a couple different stores I frequent. For new items or things I don't buy often I peruse the ingredients and try to figure out which brand or style will give me the quality I want at the best price, but you never really know until you try it. On favorite less or non-perishable foods (canned, dried) I stock up when the price is low. I even buy medium eggs. (Rarely, but at times the Kroger has pallets of medium eggs in, priced very low.) My ways became habits when money was tighter and see no reason to waste money now.

I live in an area that is an equal distance to may grocery outlets. I shop the specials, use coupons and know what stores have the lowest prices on good quality products.
I buy most of my groceries at Meijer and Kroger. I also buy some staples at Aldi and WalMart.
            Have a very blessed day!

We have the same situation. Our Meijer, Kroger and Aldi are on the same road and less than a mile difference between all of them from my house. Between the three of them I can be assured of getting eggs for under a buck. Same goes for as good price on bread, milk and cheese. I would not count out Aldi. Some of their stuff is not as good but a lot of it is. Their milk and eggs are usually on the low end price wise.

I see what you mean too on driving all over. We have a mom and pop grocer near us and if I need anything there while I'm buying the weekly meat I will just get it there than go elsewhere and burn gas.

I pretty much only buy beer and whatever I'm told. We'll watch the newspaper and stock up on the weekly sale stuff if it's a regular item. Otherwise, if we need it, we get it.

I live next to a Marsh and work next to a Kroger. I hit the sales items when I can and go to Sam's Club at least once a week.

Bread, milk & eggs get bought when we need them.

Bread, I only buy two brands, very seldom are they on sale. But, once in a while I am lucky. Other stuff, when I need it, I buy it. I like shopping at Aldi, they have a lot of good stuff, and, very cheap.

I'll spend extra for the brands I know taste better and I avoid processed food so I stay pretty much on the perimeter of any grocery store I venture into. after I decided to get control of my life and lose 85 pounds I decided to start being kinder to my body.

                        FWIW, you can freeze bread.

Not utilizing coupons and the weekly ads is same as paying full sticker and a bunch of dealer add-ons when buying a car.

I'm aware of the prices of the items I purchase. I usually do my major grocery shopping at Meijer, which is about 4 miles from my place. If I need something on a 'whim' there is a Kroger's and Marsh both next to each other about 2 miles from my place. There's also a Dollar General that's even closer. I do not drive all around to save a few cents, I go get what I need at the closest place. That said, I'm off to the grocery store right now.

I don't pay attention to prices unless something is on sale and so we buy more of it. The weekly stuff---I don't have a clue.
My depression baby dad asked me about this once, and I told him if we need it it is on the list and if it is on the list we buy it.
I don't care if milk is 20 cents a gallon cheaper elsewhere, I ain't going out of my way.
We shop a Stater Bros. because they don't have club cards or member cards or savings cards. They put stuff on sale for everybody. Period.
And I don't collect all those freaking cards from all those other freaking stores either.

There is a Ralph's across from work and on a rare occasion I have to stop in a get something.
One night the clerk asked me for my card and I told him I don't collect them.
"Then how do you expect to save all the money you can", he asked.
"I shop at Stater Bros.", was my rude reply.

I've really had to scrimp lately, and have found that Dollar General really has great prices (many times better than Wal-Mart) on a lot of non-grocery staple items like cleaning supplies, toothpaste, etc. Plus I love supporting Sarah's sponsor!
