  • Hey, My Town Almost Burned Down

    Well, much of it did.

Of course the Peshtigo fire was going on at the same time - killing many times more people and burning over a million acres. Deadliest fire in US history, I believe. But, since it was not in a major metro area nobody noticed.

Just did some research about the fires -- and there is an interesting theory that the fires around Lake Michigan were caused by a cometary impact!

The cow story was made up.
No weather forecasts are ever guaranteed, even if confidence level is high. Even a 99% probability will miss 1% of the time. That's the best anybody can do when predicting highly complex events.

I think there is a new book out about the Peshtigo fire which I'll have to read. I've read "Fire and Ice" and the story of the fire is incredible.

BTW - a friend of mine who lived in Peshtigo for a few years named his rotisserie baseball team the "Peshtigo Flames". Probably my favorite fantasy sports name ever.

Not necessarily mutually exclussive. Could have been the cow that jumped over the moon.

Yup...much easier to blame the dirty immigrants...

Seriously, though, what a difference the fire did make for the better...

One of the funnier stories relating to the fire's aftermath is the fact that the Queen of England was so upset that so many of the Civic buildings had been burned that she donated her personal library to the City to replace the books that had been burned...

Which was great, except for the fact Chicago didn't have a public library at the time...
Chicago Blackhawks done didn't do it again!

Yeah, and for that reason they should start another fire and start over again. Maybe ground zero should be City Hall.

Maybe the Chicago fire got out of hand because someone didn't pay their 75 bucks.

Maybe you think that is funny. Well, I live in Chicago, and I find that offensive to the citizens of Chicago.

It's not like I want the fire to kill anybody. Although if it did, at least those people would still be allowed to vote.

That is right, compound your insults.
