Scary stuff - get well soon, Tyler! He's had such a good season this year and the future is looking bright for him! We (Cubs fans) need you!

I'm glad that Tyler was not hurt seriously. It could have been a lot worse!
And Tyler has been a bright light for the Cubs!
BTW, the cubs are playing much better under interim managet Mike Quade.
      Have a very blessed day!

Scary! The difference between the way an Ash bat splinters and a Maple bat explodes needs further study. Castro was using a maple bat. MLB and the players association could do some significant research to make this situation safer in the off season and hopefully keep this type of incident from happening again. Eventually, a pitcher is going to get seriously hurt by one of these maple bats. (JMHO)

On a different note, hopefully this will slow down the push to return wood bats to the high school diamond. The sports governing body has rewritten the bat rules making the vast majority of composite bats illegal for 2011 and I believe all existing composite models illegal for 2012. A new standard has been issued to make aluminum/hybrid/composite bats have performance like a wood bat. (The NCAA did the research and instituted the rule first, the high schools have joined.) Balls jumping off a bat are one thing, but jagged pieces of bat flying at the fielders/base runners/coaches/umpires needs to be avoided. (JMHO)
Mess with me and you mess with the whole trailer park.

Baseball insiders have been talking about the possibility of serious injury from a maple bat breaking for a few years now. It's time to do something about it.

A Cubs trainer said Colvin was hit in his upper chest, allowing air into his chest well and potentially into his lungs. He was being treated with a chest tube to prevent a collapsed lung while doctors monitored his recovery.

I'd buy stock in this company if it was available:

                      This just in.....

Watching the A's/Rangers game. Jack Cust at the plate, Cliff Lee on the mound.

Cust hits it, bat breaks, biggest part flies straight at Lee. Fortunately his back was turned and it barely grazed him. Sharp edge just nicked him behind the ear, drew a little blood.

Could have been terminal with just a couple of inches difference in the trajectory.

If Selig, et. al. don't get off their collective butts, and soon, and get rid of maple bats then it is just a matter of time before the blood really flows. Or worse.

                      Unbelievable.
