Can someone explain the significance of 420.

I know that its pot related but is it a time? Is it a date? What started all of this? Anyone know the origins of this?

I believe it started as a cop code for a drug deal or something like that.
      It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...

Actually it'd be 320 if there was no DST.

Heres what I got from wikipedia:

            "Origins and observances
Although many diverse theories exist to explain the origin of the term, one central root of the phrase stems from a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California in 1971; the teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke cannabis at the Louis Pasteur statue.[3][4] The term became part of their group's salute, "420 Louis!",[5] and became popularized in the late 1980s by fans of The Grateful Dead.[6] Many North American cannabis users continue to observe 4:20 as a time to smoke communally. By extension April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. dating shorthand) has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis.[7][8][9] In some locations this celebration coincides with Earth Week.[10][11][12]

                Geez...
in 1951, we would meet on Rowland Ave at lunchtime for impromptu drag races.

It doesn't have any significance, it's a day for stoners to get stoned...as if they weren't every other day.

It just happens to be that they formalized that one into an organized day to get really, really stoned.

There's nothing wrong with being a stoner.

Yeah, the best part about stoners is they are too lazy and paranoid to really cause any kind of trouble.

I have never had a problem with drugs but I have a problem with inambitious, weak willed people.

Just so happens a whole bunch of people who put drugs into their body fall into that category. Not marijuana specifically. I know there are also many people who have some self control and drive and a hoot here or there is no different than people having a couple of drinks once in a while and that's fine, they have something to do with their live besides operate a spatula and pass the bong.

Moderation and responsibility, what boring people who go the distance have.

thanks for your confirmation. my birthday is 4/20 and for several years there was always something tragic happening on that date or the day before.

makes it hard to celebrate when people are dealing with heartbreak.

sooooooooo, now that i'm "older" i skip birthdays anyway; it's just another day like all the others.

i hope what ever pain you have with 4/20 will soon pass.

Oh sorry, didn't mean to suggest that your birth wasn't a good thing.

That date certainly has more than a few black eyes though.

Thanks. Lost an old friend/classmate over the weekend. Hadn't seen him in a few years but had spoke with him recently about our 10 year reunion coming up this summer. Good guy, sad day.
