Yep, they changed the name after their "incident" over the Everglades.

Ah, there's nothing more exciting than science. You get all the fun of sitting still, being quiet, writing down numbers, paying attention... Science has it all.

Actually, that's not fully true. There was another airline called AirTran that merged with ValuJet after the Everglades accident, and the AirTran name was the one that continued. I'm not sure which ownership group took over the merged airline.
"I didn't hear a single comment about airboxes, "carbashians", or how terrible the car looked. I did see dozens and dozens of little kids in awe of the speed and how cool the cars looked. We should learn from our children." --Danny Noonan

That's not fully true because they knew they couldn't get by with only a name change. So they did enough to make it "not fully true" and went on about their business. I'm not saying that I wouldn't do the same thing, just that basically for them to be rated number one now is perhaps the biggest turnaround in history.
I notice that there seems to be a lot of support for not doing the required safety inspections that's in the news now because they haven't had a serious "incident" lately.
Some people will do nearly anything in order to be able to not do anything.
