Mom.
Tough, compassionate, giving. Warm, kind, understanding.
She gave us the gift of the joy of reading, which has been one of the greatest continuing pleasures of my life. She taught us to love and respect above all, because she didn't receive a whole lot of it herself growing up.
She encouraged my artistic bent, she put up with my wild streak, she understood my desire to be on my own, and she cheered when I finally found a woman would could put up with me.
She was with me at my first race, the 500 in 78. We would see a few more together, but she wasn't one for crowds. Me neither. I still cringe walking through them. But she helped set me on the course. She never got to see me "work" a race, either in scoring or announcing, but she did finally at least get to hear Matt Prieur and I do an ASA show last Fall, via the wonder that is Internet Radio.
This season, perhaps she will get to hear and see me work.
I will miss her beyond words.
Peace.
