  • Sump Pump

    Flooded basement this morning.

Time to replace the sump pump.

    Recommendations?

Hint: I don't want cheap but I don't want to spend my retirement savings either.

TD, same thing happened to us last March due to a power outage. Not sure if you are looking at a battery backup pump, but we did and had this installed.
Don't know what your price range is, it's about a thousand dollars, but from everything I have heard, the cheap models don't last. It is hooked up to a car battery, all you have to do is run it a few minutes every month and replace the battery every 2-3 years.

This is the plumber who installed it. Mark's a good guy, our family has known him for some time.

      TD:

I've spent a lot of time worrying about sump pumps. It drives me crazy. Get the battery back-up pump. Have someone install it all (regular pump and the backup) that knows what they are doing. It's worth it.

Zoeller has been around for a long time, but I've had a Zoeller crap out on me, too. There's no completely foolproof solution. One thing I'm considering is a second sump with pump--along with the back up.

By the way, the back-up battery is usually a marine battery. It may look like a car battery, but it's not. Your backup will run until the battery runs out of juice. If it has to run a lot, it will not last long.

      Hope this helps.

Marine battery is correct, I just couldn't think of the term.

          TD,

Go down to BBC Pump and Equipment and ask for Rick Littlepage on your lunchhour on 16th Street.

Have him set you up with a 75 hp Hydromatic Centrifugal Pump (That should be much cheaper than a Flygt Pump and still be very good quality).

Since you'll need 480 volt power, you might want to put in a CAT diesel generator a slab in the back yard to ensure you have power. A battery back up isn't really feasible for that pump. You can pour the slab yourself for the generator. Probably a 12x20 footprint is fine (thats feet).

As you plumb this in, I'd recommend going with at least an SDR 21 pipe say 24" diameter and daylight it towards you least favorite neighbor.

Any questions, give Rick a call at 636-1111.

ND, I caught on when you started talking about pouring the slab.

Thanks for the advice. I bought a Stevens with a battery backup. Then I had to rent a fan & a dehumifier.

              I need to lie down.

I just bought a manual bilge pump for my sailboat. It requires me to sit in the cockpit and pump the handle until the bilge is dry. I should be able to do about 10 gallons a minute if I'm really frightened.

I expect that this would not be a good solution for your house.

TD, I've had the same issue a couple time when the electric went out during the night. Actually getting my basement finished next week and the guy is putting in one of the marine battery backups as well as an alarm that will go off when the water reaches a given level, he assures it will wake everyone in the house .

A few years electric goes out and I wake to the water about to start coming out of the hole and over the basement. I fire up the generator but at this point my sump pump can keep up being so far behind and the water starts to spill over. I plug in the little garden hose attached pump I have for draining the pool and stuff and still no luck. My buddy stops over an brought a pump he has, well no way to get three pumps down in the hole. Then he hit on the magic idea. Went out to my shed and got the pump off my pool filter, now that can move some water. Had it back in control in 10 minutes. Now every winter I bring that pump downstairs and leave it next down there just in case.

                    Is it May yet ?

Hey, I like the faux brick wall, *-wipe.

Besides we haven't yet finished the basement so damage was minimal. A couple of surround sound speakers and a remote control that my kid left on the floor.
