My printer is fighting for its life

When I try to print something it just goes to the print queue. The other night I hit print and the document parked in the print queue. When I got up in the morning it had printed.

Somebody please tell me why it won't print immediately.

The life of my printer is dependent on a quick answer.

Actually, I am tres sympathetic.
Our old war horse HP seemed to be fading fast....80% of the document would print dark---but the upper 20% was faded.
So I talked the powers to be into buying a new one.
Then days later, the office genius changed the toner---even though there was no low toner warning.
Ta-Dah!!!!!!!!
Now, what to do with this new HP printer.

I bought an HP 855 in 1995 for $500.

It worked flawlessly for 11-12 years but last Christmas my mother-in-law bought us a new printer. That POS would go through an ink cartridge in a week with minimal usage but my wife wouldn't replace it because it was a gift from her mother.

She finally agreed to replace it and that's gotten us where we are now.

For those keeping score at home I uninstalled the program last night and am reinstalling it as we speak.

That's a good move--usually. It's normally the best way to reinstall your drivers (sorry no response earlier to your "how do I do that?"; I went to bed). Are you running XP or Vista?

It'd be best to go to the manufacturers site and get the most up to date drivers for the thing, rather than installing from the disc.
