  • Virus?

Every time I log on to Track Forum on my home computer in the last two weeks, I get a virus that crashes the thing down.

It's only Track Forum and when I'm on. Not my kids, wife etc. anybody else getting this problem? Does not happen to my computer at work.

I haven't been having any problems logging on either. Have you done any kind of virus/spyware/adware scans lately? If you don't have already, I strongly recommend Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. Also, if you're using Internet Explorer you might consider going to Firefox as well since it has fewer security flaws in it and many extra features over IE. If you need help with any of these, feel free to send me a PM or respond in the thread.

What DK said. Good stuff, easy to install and use. BTW, if you don't have a good anti-virus program, I highly recommend AVG Free available at Grisoft .

Gee, whatever you do don't put Spyware Blaster on the machine. The guy who built my machine thought he was doing me a favor, but the first time I went online I got slammed with so much crap that my browser was hijacked to the point I couldn't set my homepage and some gambling tool bar was installed. What other computer guys tell me is that the Spyware Blaster guy charges these spam companies to put their crap into his program so you get blasted with spyware!

Naturally, I took it of, use Norton, Windows anti-spyware, Adaware, Spybot..and most important, I clean out my cookies and internet temp fuiles two or three times a day.

Oh, one more thing.........stay off the porno sites. They ar infamous for nasty spyware and virus'.

Thanks for the tip about Skybot!!!! My comtputer is perkier already. And yes, I had problems with the virus, also. I like AVG. Right now, I have the "trial period" for Norton but when that's up next month, I'll get AVG back on it. Should I stay with the free version or upgrade to the "professional version"?
BTW, should I also download Adaware in addition to the Skybot?

I wonder who the SOB was who infected this site?
THANKS, again for the advice! These Spybot virus were driving me crazy...fortunately, Norton has deleted them (so far).

ps...I'm not sure if I'm ready to make the big step to Firefox...I need to do a little more research.

I think that Norton is better than AVG but I'm too cheap to pay for updates all the time. Having said that, I just have the free version of AVG and Adaware. You should have both Adaware and Spybot on your system as each one will find things that the other will not. I use Spybot as my primary scanner (weekly) and will have adaware scan once a month.

If you haven't used Firefox yet, go ahead and download it to mess around with a bit. Once you've used it 5 minutes you'll realize that it's just like IE but with extra security. Transfering bookmarks also doesn't take but about 30 seconds. Of course, if you don't like it, it doesn't take much to uninstall again.

I had a terrible time with malware slowing my system down and hijacking my browser for awhile, but I have not had a single problem since upgrading from Norton AntiVirus 2001 to NAV 2005 one year ago. The 2005 version blocks "Internet worms" that the 2001 version did not, and that has stopped ALL of my previous problems. I can't say enough good things about it. I now browse worry-free. Well worth the annual subscription fee.

I also use both Ad-Aware and Spybot to scan regularly, but they have found nothing serious (just those pesky "tracking cookies") since I installed NAV 2005. I also clean out my temporary internet files and cookies regularly. You can set IE to clean them out automatically every time you shut down, but it slows down the shutdown process.
